COMMANDER OF STATE POLICE DIVISION DIES
The commander of the State Police 4th Division headquarters covering much of Southwest Virginia died Friday night in a Norfolk hospital following a heart attack.Capt. Thomas Flanary had gone to Chesapeake on police business Tuesday. After suffering from chest pains, he was taken to a hospital where he had a heart attack.
He was transferred Wednesday to Norfolk General Hospital for an operation in which a pacemaker was to be implanted. But he died of advanced heart deterioration Friday night.
Lt. C.L. Bailey will be acting division commander until a permanent appointment is named. Flanary had held the job since 1987.
The division covers the counties of Giles, Pulaski and Carroll and all counties west of those.
The funeral will be in Flanary's native Richlands in Tazewell County. Hurst-Scott Funeral Home is handling arrangements. - Southwest Bureau
