VIRGINIA HOLDS OFF CLEMSON RALLY 85-81

Heather Burge had 23 points and 10 rebounds and top-ranked Virginia took a 20-point lead Saturday before holding on for an 85-81 women's basketball victory over No. 19 Clemson.

Burge scored 10 points during a 24-9 run to start the second half and extend the lead to 20 for the visiting Cavaliers (24-1 overall, 13-1 ACC).

Clemson (17-8, 8-7), with the help of a 7-0 run, closed to 78-74 with about one minute left. However, Virginia's Dawn Staley, who scored 20, sank four free throws to preserve the win.

Staley, the all-time leading scorer in Virginia women's basketball, became the first to go over 2,000 points. She has 2,014.

Cheron Wells led Clemson with 22 points.

Virginia, which led 40-36 at the half, shot 62.7 percent, including 16 of 25 in the second half. Clemson shot 42.6 percent. \

Radford 80, Winthrop 63: At Radford, Tammie Crown scored 22 points to lead the Highlanders to a Big South Conference win over Winthrop.

The Highlanders (16-9, 9-1) zipped to a 43-27 halftime lead and never trailed in the final home game for seniors Patrinda Toney, Becky Harden and Roz Groce, who were honored before the contest.

Toney scored 16 points, and Harden added 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Groce had six points and three assists. Crown, a junior, had 11 rebounds.

Carmen Thomas led Winthrop (4-19, 3-6) with 14 points. Revonda Whitley added 12 points as the Eagles dropped their fourth consecutive game.

Radford has won 10 of its past 12 games. \
