ROANOKE HITS ROAD FOR ODAC OPENER
Although it took the final day of the regular season to determine, Hampden-Sydney lived up to its preseason billing and captured the top seeding for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament, which begins Tuesday with opening-round games at campus sites.Led by ODAC player of the year candidate Russell Turner, the Tigers (20-5 overall, 14-4 ODAC) clinched the regular season title outright by beating Lynchburg on Saturday, while Virginia Wesleyan lost at Bridgewater. Hampden-Sydney will play host to eighth-seeded Randolph-Macon (9-16, 5-13) on Tuesday.
Virginia Wesleyan's loss dropped the Marlins from a tie for first to No. 4 seed. The Blue Marlins (17-8, 13-5) will play host to Roanoke College (15-10, 12-6). In the other opening round games, No. 7 Lynchburg (9-15, 6-12) plays at No. 2 Emory & Henry (18-7, 13-5), while No. 6 Guilford (12-12, 8-10) travels to No. 3 Bridgewater (20-5, 13-5).
The winners will advance to the ODAC championships this weekend at the Salem Civic Center.
By not finishing in the top eight after the regular season, Washington & Lee and Eastern Mennonite were eliminated from the tournament.
