PLENTY OF `BANG FOR BUCK' LOCALLY
No matter what the New River Valley United Way boards decide about United Way of America, the same allegations of high executive salaries and other expenses cannot be made at the Montgomery County and Radford organization, organization leaders say.Unlike the head of United Way of America, Annette Clark, executive director of the Montgomery County-Radford United Way, is paid $29,000 a year. She gets no perks, pays her own benefits and "hell no!" she doesn't have a company car, said board President Taylor Cole.
"She's a top-flight executive and she's not being compensated for what she's worth," Cole added. "She's worth every penny we pay her."
Clark, who has spent two years with the Christiansburg-based organization, has seven years experience with four United Way groups.
It's a job she loves and can't seem to leave.
The organization has two other full-time staff members and spends 16 percent, or roughly $109,000, of its contributions on administrative costs, which include salaries and overhead.
"We're getting one helluva bang for our buck" with Clark, said Cole. "I hate that things like this come up when local organizations are doing such a wonderful job."
