COURT REFUSES TO BLOCK LAKE GASTON PIPELINE
The Supreme Court refused Monday to block a pipeline project that would pump water 85 miles from a lake on the Virginia-North Carolina border to Virginia Beach. The pipeline has been in litigation since 1984, when North Carolina filed a lawsuit to stop Virginia Beach's plan to siphon 60 million gallons a day from Lake Gaston.
"Thank God. Thank God," Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera E. Oberndorf said when told of the high court's decision. "This clears the way for us to begin construction."
The court, without comment, let stand a ruling by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond. The appeals panel said the Army Corps of Engineers was not required to issue an environmental impact statement before approving the Lake Gaston project.
