HIGH LEVEL OF CHEMICAL FOUND IN WELL WATER
Some of the 16 well-water samples collected by the state Health Department in the Hollins-Plantation Road area had a high level of a chemical, says Chuck Conner of the department.Samples were collected Friday and analyzed over the weekend, he said, "and now we have to get a grip on" the results.
Conner plans to meet today with Dr. Molly Hagan, Alleghany Region health director, to review the results and to determine what steps to take.
The samples were taken within a quarter-mile radius of the first well in the Tinkerview Trailer Court where trichloroethylene was found. "We concentrated on the wells right around the bad well," Conner said.
Hagan has said she has no evidence to connect the chemical with cancer in humans. Any effects of TCE are likely long-term ones, she said.
The state Water Control Board is still looking for the source of the chemical, said Kip Foster, a spokesman for the board's Roanoke regional office.
Joyce Hicks, who lives in the trailer park, said she has complained about the water there for more than five years. She and her family bring water home from work in 8-gallon jugs, she said.
