NEW PLANNER IS `GUNG-HO' ABOUT JOB

Martha Hooker, a former administrative assistant in Roanoke College's resource development office, is Supervisor Ed Kohinke's choice for the Catawba seat on the Roanoke County Planning Commission.

Hooker will fill the vacancy left by Marian Chappelle's resignation.

Hooker could not be reached for comment on Monday. But Kohinke said she would bring "a unique perspective to the Planning Commission - that of a young parent and rural landowner."

It's important to have a woman on the Planning Commission, too, Kohinke said.

As Chappelle found out, being on the Planning Commission takes a lot of time. Hooker "has the time," Kohinke said. "And she really has the interest. This gal is really gung ho about the job."

A dozen Catawba residents expressed interest in the Planning Commission seat, Kohinke said. A few lost interest when they realized how much time the job involves, he said, "but I still ended up with a terrific spread of alternatives," he said. The choice "was an agonizing one in view of the many highly talented and qualified applicants."

Hooker is a member of the Mason Cove Civic Club. Kohinke used to be president of the civic club.

She is a native of Oklahoma - as is Chappelle, coincidentally - and received a bachelor's degree in marketing from Harding University in Searcy, Ark. She worked at Roanoke College from 1984 to 1986.

Her husband, Brian, is a government teacher and head football coach at Glenvar High School. The Hookers have two children, ages 5 and 2.
