2 RU STUDENTS CHARGED WITH DORM BREAK-IN, THEFT

Two Radford University students have been charged with breaking into two dormitory rooms and taking jewelry from one.

Mark Ellis, 20, and Theresa M. Young, 21, were charged this week, Tobias Phillips, campus police director, said Tuesday.

Each faces two charges of breaking and entering and one charge of grand larceny.

Ellis, a sophomore management major from the West Indies, was a starting midfielder for Radford's soccer team last season, said Mike Ashley, assistant director of sports information.

Young, a sophomore speech major, is from Arlington.

Phillips said a student in Tyler Hall saw two people in a suite mate's dormitory room on the afternoon of Feb. 12. When the two people saw the student, they left the room and nothing was taken.

Ellis was charged with breaking and entering in that incident. After an investigation, Young also was charged with breaking and entering, he said.

After further investigation, police charged Ellis and Young with breaking into a Muse Hall room early Feb. 11 and taking a necklace and a bracelet valued at more than $200.

The rooms were not locked, Phillips said, but merely pushing open a door constitutes breaking and entering.

Ellis was arrested Sunday. Young was arrested Monday. Each is free on $10,000 bond. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for March 30 in Radford General District Court.

Deborah Brown, Radford's director of public information and relations, said soccer coach Don Staley has placed Ellis on interim suspension pending the outcome of disciplinary and criminal proceedings.
