SUPERVISORS LIFT BAN ON SMOKING
A ban on smoking in Roanoke County-owned buildings was lifted Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors.
The ban had been in effect since Jan. 1. But the 29 percent of county employees who smoke didn't like that. Neither did many volunteer firefighters who smoke, Chief T.E. Wagner of the Mount Pleasant Fire Department told the supervisors. "I can't afford to lose anybody out of my company" because of the smoking ban, he said.
And Assistant County Attorney Joseph Obenshain told the supervisors they probably don't have the authority under state law to ban smoking.
So the supervisors approved a plan to allow smoking in designated areas and to reimburse employees up to $30 for participating in stop-smoking programs.
They will ask the School Board and constitutional officers in the county courthouse and jail to go along with the plan.
