POWER-LINE FORUM MARCH 6
A Virginia Tech environmental group will be host for a forum March 6 on the 765,000-volt power line being proposed by Appalachian Power Co.The public forum will be at 7:30 p.m. in Colonial Hall at Tech's Squires Center.
Apco wants to build a 110-mile power line from Oceana, W.Va., to Cloverdale to meet what it says will be customer demand by the turn of the century. Some citizen groups oppose the line, saying it will threaten the environment and the health of residents.
The panel will include two Apco officials; a representative each from the opposition groups COPE and Common Ground; Tech Professor Ben Johnson, who headed up a joint study to select a proposed route; and a U.S. Forest Service representative.
The agency is conducting an environmental impact report on the line's potential effect on the Jefferson National Forest.
Carl Zipper, with the Virginia Tech Center for Coal and Energy, will moderate.
