MAN CHARGED IN SHOOTING WAS FREE ON BOND

A Christiansburg man charged in a Tuesday night shooting in Blacksburg was under indictment on drug charges and free on bond at the time.

Marshall E. Williamson III, 22, of Nugget Ridge Apartments was in the Montgomery County Jail without bond Wednesday, charged with malicious wounding and using a firearm to commit a felony.

Richard W. Adams, 20, of College Street, was shot twice as he was leaving the Blacksburg Recreation Center.

He was in stable condition at Montgomery Regional Hospital Wednesday and out of intensive care.

Adams was shot once in the right hand and once in the back after playing in a pick-up basketball game inside the Recreation Center on Patrick Henry Drive, Blacksburg police said.

Witnesses told police that two men had a confrontation during a basketball game. There was pushing and shoving, but the game continued.

After the game, Adams and other players went to the parking lot, where Adams was blocked from getting into his truck to leave, witnesses said.

Words and pushes were exchanged and the assailant pulled out a .25-caliber automatic pistol and shot Adams in the hand, police said. Adams ran across the parking lot and was shot in the back.

Witnesses were able to get the license of the car the shooter left in and police pursued the car to Christiansburg, where they arrested Williamson.

Williamson had been free on $10,000 bond when the shooting happened. He was indicted last month by a Montgomery County grand jury on four counts of distributing cocaine in October and November.

Williamson and two other people are accused of selling small amounts of crack cocaine to an undercover officer.

Williamson was scheduled to appear in Montgomery County Circuit Court on March 10 on the drug charges. He was scheduled to appear today in Blacksburg General District Court on the new charges.

Blacksburg Police Capt. Bill Brown said that children as young as 10 were at the Recreation Center, but they were not in the parking lot during the shooting.
