3 HEALTH GROUPS URGE REGULATION OF TOBACCO
Three prominent health organizations said Thursday they want tobacco to be considered an addictive drug and regulated by the Food and Drug Administration."The health of the American people can no longer be sacrificed for the profits of the tobacco industry," the presidents of the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association and the American Cancer Society said in a letter to President Bush.
"If tobacco is to remain on the market, it should be treated for what it is, an addictive drug," said the letter, which also said that cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 400,000 deaths annually in the United States.
