REPORTED EARNINGS

J.C. Penney Co.

J.C. Penney Co. Inc., Dallas-based retailer operating department stores in Roanoke, on Thursday reported earnings of $528 million for its fiscal year ended Jan. 25, down 8.5 percent from $577 million a year earlier. Earnings per share were $4, down from $4.33. Sales for the year fell 1 percent to $16.2 billion from $16.4 billion a year earlier.

Fourth-quarter net income was $301 million, or $2.28 per share, up 46 percent from $206 million, or $1.55 per share, in the l990 quarter. Sales were $5.4 billion, up 2.2 percent from $5.3 billion.
