HONAKER POSSIBLY SKIMMED $500,000

Federal sources estimate the amount of money missing from the Bristol Sheriff's Department at more than half million dollars, a newspaper reported.

The Herald Courier of Bristol, quoting sources it did not identify in this morning's editions, said the investigation of former Sheriff Marshall Honaker has uncovered more personal checking accounts.

The new accounts brings the amount to more than $500,000, the sources said. Federal officials have alleged that Honaker skimmed the money from the department for his personal use.

During a federal grand jury investigation, Honaker committed suicide. He was never charged with a crime. Federal officials originally said Honaker may have embezzled more than $300,000.

Sources told the newspaper the grand jury is expected to reconvene March 17 to determine if anyone other than Honaker was involved.
