YOU CAN EXPLORE ALCOHOL ABUSE OR HEAR A BENEFIT GOSPEL SING

SPECIALS: WVRU continues its broadcast of the 12-part series "Thinking About Drinking" on Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. The half-hour documentaries explore America's No. 1 substance-abuse problem. The fifth segment is titled "One Step At a Time" and features the history and an exploration of Alcoholics Anonymous.

WFNR will have a benefit gospel sing and auction March 20 at the Christiansburg National Guard Armory to help disc jockey Dandy Don's family through a recent loss. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. Entertainment begins at 7 p.m. and includes performances by Wanda Gail, the Gospel Strings, Sounds of Harmony and the Christian Gentlemen.

\ NEWS PROGRAMS: WVRU's "Talk of the Town," which airs 8 p.m. Wednesday and 1 p.m. Friday, features Vicki Linkous, an educational studies professor at Radford University, discussing "Encouraging Creative Learning Techniques."

"Speakers' Corner" airs on WVRU Monday at 1 p.m. with anchorman Roger Mudd, who this week interviews Susan Faludi, a Pulitzer-prize-winning reporter from the Wall Street Journal. Faludi will discuss "An Undeclared War Against Women?" - a look at the image and treatment of American women over the past decade.

WJJJ has Paul Harvey twice today, 8:30 a.m. and 12:10 p.m., with quips on events and people as well as news and comment.

\ INTERNATIONAL: "Lakutshon Ilanga: Music Is a Healer" on WVRU features South African music Tuesday at 8 p.m. Part 8 of this 13-part series is entitled "Siyaya: The Music of Struggle," which looks at the ways music has affected the battle against apartheid.

WVRU's "International Folk Music Hour" airs today, 2-3 p.m.

WUVT airs "New Music" weekdays noon-9 p.m. and an "International Fest" today, 5-9 p.m., with reggae, ska, blues, dance and more.

\ LIVE BASKETBALL: The University of North Carolina-Charlotte is at Virginia Tech today starting at 4:40 p.m. The game can be heard over WVVV, WKEX, WJJJ, WRAD and WRIQ. Those stations also will carry Tech at East Carolina University on Monday beginning at 7 p.m.

WKEX will carry the finals of the New River District High School Basketball Tournament tonight at 7 p.m.

\ ROCK: WVRU's "Long Live Rock," Monday at 9 p.m., has "The Year in Music: 1972," which covers the social, political and cultural events of the year and includes music from Wishbone Ash, Edgar Winter and Stevie Wonder.

On WVVV this week: "Metal Shop" airs Wednesday at 11 p.m.; George Thorogood & the Destroyers' "Born To Be Bad" is this week's "Album Feature" Sunday at 11 p.m.; "In the Studio," Sunday 9 p.m., has Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours;" Friday's "Five at Five" has John Mellencamp.

\ COUNTRY: WKEX has the "Nashville Record Review" today, 12:05-4:30 p.m.

WFNR has "Grand Old Country" tonight, 8-10, with golden country oldies.

WPSK airs "Star Trax" Sunday at 10 p.m. and "American Country Countdown," with the Top 40 of the week, Sunday at 4 p.m.

WRAD airs "The Ralph Emery Show" weekdays at 10:30 a.m. This week's featured artist is Doug Stone.

WRIQ has the "Top 30 Country Countdown" with Jim Casey on Sunday, 1-4 p.m.

\ GOSPEL/CHRISTIAN: WKEX simulcasts "Focus on the Family," weekdays at 9:05 a.m. This week's programming is: "A Personal Visit With the Quayles" Monday; "A Family Man in Government" Tuesday; "Moms: Prayer Warriors for Schools" Wednesday; and "Parenting Isn't For Cowards" Thursday and Friday.

WKEX will have live gospel music Sunday at noon with the Dagenhart Sisters.

\ BLUEGRASS: WFNR's live "Bluegrass Talk Back Show," 8-9 p.m. Thursday, features Carl Basham.

\ CHILDREN: WUVT's "Hickory Dickory Dock" airs Saturday mornings, 9-11, with call-ins, an astronomy "Night Watch" segment and children's poems, songs and discussions.

WKEX's "The Children's Bible Hour" is heard at 9:05 a.m. today and 11:05 a.m. on Sunday.

\ JAZZ: WUVT has it Sunday through Friday, 9 a.m.-noon. The station also carries 20th century classical music Sunday through Friday, 6-9 a.m.

WKEX has "Wax Works," 1-2 p.m. weekdays, with big band, jazz, swing and ballad greats.

WVRU's "Mellow Tones," which has fusion, mainstream and new age jazz, airs Sunday, 9 a.m.-noon.

WVVV's "True Blues" airs Sunday at 8 p.m. with music from the legends and the newcomers.
