SPORTS BAR CLOSES

Snuffy's Sports Bar closed without warning Wednesday, a few days after the University Mall owners told Snuffy's owner Daniel "Snuffy" Smith to leave by March 31.

Mall manager Mary Ann Martin-Nunn said a Feb. 22 parking lot fight between bar customers prompted the mall owner - EBL&S Properties in Philadelphia - to give Smith notice. "That wasn't the first incident," Martin-Nunn said.

"The mall management is just kind of fed up with the behavior of some of my clientele in the parking lot, and basically I can't blame them," said Smith, who bought the business in May.

He decided to close the bar and restaurant Wednesday night after work, and will move the equipment out by the end of March; he said the mall wouldn't allow him to sell the business. The bar employed seven.

Martin-Nunn said Snuffy's departure brings to three the number of empty stores at the mall, which has had a high vacancy rate for several years. She said she has leases on other unoccupied stores. "We're filling up. University Mall is coming back," she said.
