TURNER TOP ODAC MEN'S PLAYER

Former Patrick Henry High School star Russell Turner capped a four-year career at Hampden-Sydney College by being selected the 1991-92 Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's basketball player of the year on Friday.

Turner, a senior center, joins Lynchburg's E.D. Schechterly and Eastern Mennonite's Leonard Dow as the only four-time All-ODAC selections.

Turner headlines a team that features five of the top six scorers in the conference. He led the ODAC in scoring at 22.4 points per game and in rebounding with 9.7 per game.

Also on the first team are junior forward Ross Kirtley of Emory & Henry, who played at Martinsville High School; senior forward Todd Rush of Bridgewater; junior center Troy Smith of Randolph-Macon; and sophomore center Rick Chalk of Virginia Wesleyan.

Making the second team were Roanoke College junior forward Rick Becker, Paul Ferrell of Guilford, Daryle Dooms of Lynchburg, Vaughn Troyer of Eastern Mennonite and Bat Barber of Hampden-Sydney.

Turner, 6 feet 8 and 225 pounds, is Hampden-Sydney's career scoring leader with 2,174 points going into today's ODAC tournament semifinal game against Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center.

Turner has moved past 1990-91 ODAC player of the year Leon Hill of Emory & Henry into fourth place in Virginia Division III career scoring leaders. Turner also was selected to the All-South Region team for the third consecutive year.

The women's All-ODAC team is to be announced today. - Staff report
