WYTHE LOSES HOGOHEEGEE

George Wythe hung tough against Lebanon in Friday's Hogoheegee District championship basketball game, but the Pioneers pulled away to win the title with a 79-68 victory at Emory & Henry.

Both teams advance to the Region C tournament next week at Lord Botetourt. George Wythe will play Covington at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Lebanon plays on Friday at 8:30 p.m. and will face the winner of the game between the Pioneer and Mountain Empire districts' second seeds.

Ben Campbell led Lebanon in scoring with 23 points followed by Brian Summers with 22. Summers scored 16 of his points in the second half to keep the Pioneers alive.

Chris Waddell led the Maroons with 21 points, and 19 were in the second half.

Chilhowie defeated Rural Retreat 45-31 to win the junior varsity tournament. The Warriors finish the season with a 21-0 record. \

Thursday's games

\ Hogoheegee District: At Emory, Lebanon and George Wythe scored semifinal victories.

Eric Meadows scored 19 points and was 6-of-6 on free throws in a 24-12 fourth-quarter outburst that gave Lebanon a 65-50 win over Chilhowie.

Jason Fore led Chilhowie (10-12) with 15 points, followed by Eric Sheets with 13 and Patrick Brooks with 12.

George Wythe made 20 of 28 free throws and got 24 points from Sie Dickinson to beat Northwood 83-67 in a game delayed 1 hour, 13 minutes in the third quarter by a power failure. The outage was caused by an auto accident near the school.

Jeff Bourne added 18 points and sparked Wythe with numerous steals and layups. \

Highlands District: At Bristol, Eddie Boothe got 14 of his game-high 24 points in the second half as Marion knocked off Lee 74-56 to advance to tonight's title game.

Marion (19-4) was leading 33-30 at the half but turned on the heat in the second half with Boothe doing most of the damage from inside. Tim Hinson added 11 for the winners. Ryan Fritz paced Lee (11-11) with 16.

Marion will face John Battle, which nipped host Virginia High 55-53, for the championship today at 8 p.m. \
