HOKIES OPEN WITH 11-6 BASEBALL WIN

Les Jennette helped Virginia Tech open its 100th season of baseball with a bang on Friday, hitting a pinch-hit grand slam that capped an 11-6 victory over North Carolina-Wilmington.

Brad Clontz, a junior right-hander from Patrick County High School, got the victory. He pitched 8 1/3 innings, gave up eight hits and four earned runs, struck out eight and walked five.

Tech broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning when senior first baseman Jay Honse from Cave Spring High School singled in a run. Steve Render followed with an RBI groundout for a two-run lead.

In the eighth inning, freshman catcher Denny Hedgepeth hit a two-out RBI single to put Tech ahead 7-4. The Hokies then loaded the bases, and Jennette followed with his grand slam, the game's only extra-base hit.

Tech plays at UNC-Greensboro today at 1 p.m. - Staff report
