ALEXANDER TOPS ALL-RVD; PH SHUT OUT
Pulaski County's Kevin Alexander has been selected the Roanoke Valley District boys' basketball player of the year, but who didn't make the district's first team will raise some eyebrows. The five-player first team does not include one player from Patrick Henry, the No. 1-ranked Group AAA team in the state.
The team, as picked by the RVD coaches, includes Pulaski County's Chris Burns, William Fleming's David Williams and Carlos Rhodes, and Cave Spring's Kerry Whitt.
The coach of the year is Pulaski County's Pat Burns, whose team finished in a tie for second with William Fleming in the district standings.
PH coach Woody Deans, when asked for his reaction to having no member of his squad on the first team, refused comment.
The snub of PH players means that none will be eligible for the Group AAA All-Northwestern Region team that also is picked by the coaches. However, the PH players will be eligible to make The Associated Press' All-Group AAA team selected by sportswriters.
Officials of the RVD said only that the five coaches gave their nominations, then voted on the players. No coach was allowed to vote for players on his team.
Four PH players - Jonas Callis, Troy Manns, Timmy Basham and Curtis Staples - made the second team, along with Franklin County's Alessandro Lima.
Alexander averaged 9.8 points for Pulaski and was third in the district in assists with 7.5 per game behind Manns and William Fleming's Derrick Hines, who was honorable mention.
Other honorable-mention players: Pulaski County's Chris Foster; Franklin County's Tim Witcher, Bryan Davis, Chris Mattox and Stevie Reynolds; William Fleming's Reggie Reynolds and Phillip Lacey; and Cave Spring's Baker Doughty and Jason Lavinder.
