BARBER SOARS IN GROUP AAA LONG JUMP

Cave Spring's Tiki Barber might have turned in the best performance nationally this winter as he soared 23 feet, 9 inches to win the Group AAA indoor long jump championship Friday at George Mason University.

Barber, rated second coming into the meet, bettered the 23-7 3/4 performance turned in by Sheddric Fields of South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas. Barber's performance was 4 inches better than his previous best this winter.

Twin brother Ronde Barber, who has best performance nationally in the 55-meter hurdles (7.42 seconds) will run his event today.

The only other Roanoke Valley District track performer who placed in Friday's events was Patrick Henry's Regina Johnson, who put the shot 36 feet, 2 3/4 inches for fourth place in the girls' meet. - Staff report
