FERRUM WOMEN MAKE DIXIE CONFERENCE FINAL

Niki Claiborne had 19 points and 18 rebounds Friday as Ferrum eliminated top-seeded Christopher Newport in the semifinals of the Dixie Conference women's basketball tournament.

Ferrum will play Methodist College for the championship tonight at 6 p.m. Methodist College, the third-seeded team, defeated Greensboro College 99-76 in the other semifinal game.

Ferrum outrebounded Christopher Newport 59-46, and it never trailed during the second half.

Ferrum also held Karen Barefoot, who leads the nation in assists with 12 a game, to five.

\ Men

\ Virginia Union 72, Fayetteville State 57: At Richmond, Walter Hurd scored 17 points as Virginia Union defeated Fayetteville State in the semifinals of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament.

Virginia Union (24-3) will face Johnson C. Smith in today's championship game.

In the other game, Mark Sherrill scored 17 points as Johnson C. Smith (24-5) defeated Norfolk State.

Norfolk State (22-8) held a 48-39 lead with 9:04 remaining. The Golden Bulls allowed Norfolk State only two field goals the remainder of the game.

\ Salisbury St. 120, Shenandoah 100: At Salisbury, Md., Dameon Ross scored 32 points and Andre Foreman added 22 to lead Salisbury State (25-1) past Shenandoah in the semifinals of the Eastern States Conference tournament.

Salisbury State plays Allentown in the tournament final tonight. Allentown defeated Frostburg State 75-68 in the other semifinal.

Don Turpin led Shenandoah (9-18) with 32 points.
