SAY `SANE' OR `INSANE,' NOT `CRAZY'
I WAS APPALLED to see the headline Feb. 16, "Jeffrey Dahmer is not `crazy'." The use of the term "crazy" in reference to a psychiatric disorder is very inappropriate. The legal term "sane" or "insane" should have been used. "Insane" is not even a medical term and is used only in a legal context.I saw recently that a movie dealing with a psychiatric disorder had a psychological consultant. Perhaps your newspaper needs to do some consulting before using obsolete terms. I am sure the Mental Health Association or any mental-health professional would be glad to help you.
Newspapers need to be on the cutting edge of knowledge and information. ARVIL L. PENNINGTON ROANOKE
