BRITISH QUARTET TO PLAY AT OLIN HALL

England's Maggini Quartet, described by Andrew Porter of The New Yorker magazine as a "new young star in a dense-packed firmament," will give a program of Mozart, Beethoven and Szymanowski on Tuesday at Olin Hall.

The performance is sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Chamber Music Society. It begins at 8 p.m.

The Maggini was formed in 1988 when violinist Thomas Bowes gave up his solo career to join three former members of the Bochmann Quartet. The group performs extensively in Europe and on the British Broadcasting Corporation. It made its New York debut Nov. 24, 1991.

The Maggini actively commissions new work and is known for its anecdotal spoken introductions of the music it performs at concerts. It is named for Italian violin maker Giovanni Paolo Maggini (1581-1630).

In addition to Bowes, members of the quartet are violinist David Angel, violist Martin Outram and cellist Michal Kaznowski.

The program for Tuesday's concert consists of Mozart's "The Hunt" Quartet (K. 458), Beethoven's Quartet (Op. 59, No. 2) and the Quartet No. 1 of the late Ukrainian composer Karol Szymanowski.

Ann-Marie Horner, president of the chamber music society, will give a preview of the program Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Room 325 of Olin Hall.

Tickets for the concert are $10 for general admission and $5 for students. They can be bought at the door or reserved by calling the Olin Hall box office at 375-2333.
