I am a taxpayer and live in Christiansburg. I'm very pleased with Supervisors Nick Rush and Jim Moore on their vote to kill the so-called "smart road." We need more men like those on our Board of Supervisors.
First of all, I would support the road if it would save more time. But spending the money it will take to build this road only to save six minutes seems ridiculous. There was argument that it would bring new jobs. This doesn't seem probable with the declining economy.
Also, it's difficult to see how building this road can help congestion on U.S. 460 between Blacksburg and Christiansburg. The times from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and around 5 p.m. are busy. So how would the smart road save time for those using U.S. 460? Maybe at Tech's recess and football games it would help. But building this road for this purpose would be foolish.
It's about time for the people of Christiansburg and Blacksburg to pull together to make our area a great place to live. Our tax money should go to keep up what we have, not what we don't need.
I join with the people of Ellett Valley in speaking against this road. When big spenders see this road congested and overpacked, where will our next road be and how much time will it save?
People have moved to Montgomery County because of jobs and schools, but most will tell you they choose to stay because of the beauty and peacefulness of our countryside. It's a shame that all most people think of is spending a dime and getting there faster, six minutes faster.
Since this seems to divide our county, maybe it's time the citizens vote for or against, and not the liberal politicians.\ Rusty Price\ Christiansburg
