EX-ROANOKE OFFICIAL JOHN WILLIAMSON DIES

John Taylor Williamson, Roanoke's first housing inspector, died Friday at the Richfield Nursing Center. He was 87.

In 1951, Williamson retired as chairman of the City Board of Assessors and became housing inspector. He was named to the position by a citizens advisory board after the city enacted a housing and hygiene ordinance.

He was in charge of inspecting homes for unsanitary conditions and notifying homeowners of violations.

Williamson resigned from the job in 1952 to become a loan officer and appraiser for First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Roanoke.

He is survived by a son, John T. Williamson Jr. of Arlington; a daughter, Ann Hall of Bedford; a sister, Dorothy Helvestine of Roanoke; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Evergreen Burial Park.
