UNOFFICIALLY, GENERALS DOMINATE ODAC MEET

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference doesn't officially sponsor women's track, but the Washington and Lee women's team unofficially whipped the competition Saturday for its third straight ODAC title.

The Generals took first place in six of 13 events to earn 125 points. Eastern Mennonite and Roanoke tied for second with 50, followed by Bridgewater with 32 and Lynchburg with 26.

Six conference records bit the dust. Wendy Neel of W&L set records while winning the long jump (16 feet 1 1/2) and 55-meter dash (7.5 seconds), and Kim Herring established a new standard in the 800 (2:33.88). The Generals also set a new mark in the 400 relay (4:36.6) and took first in the 1,600 relay.

For Roanoke, former Christiansburg runner Cathie Showalter won the 1,500 - in the meet-record time of 5:07.08 - and the 3,000. The Maroons also set a record in winning the 3,200 relay (11:05.64). - Staff report
