ROANOKES' COGAR GETS ODAC HONOR

Roanoke College senior forward Donna Cogar was voted Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball player of the year in a poll of the league's coaches, the ODAC announced Saturday at the Salem Civic Center.

Cogar, from Stuarts Draft, was a second team All-ODAC selection last season. This season, she led the Maroons in scoring with a 12.6 average. She also averaged 6.5 rebounds per game and had a team-high 68 assists.

It is the second consecutive year a Roanoke player has claimed the honor. Last season, Roanoke's Karen Jenkins received the award.

Joining Cogar on the All-ODAC first team is guard Missie Hensley of Eastern Mennonite, center Brenda Davis of Guilford, forward Pam Conk of Randolph-Macon and Virginia Wesleyan guard Martha Sainz.

Hollins junior guard Serena Beedie and Roanoke senior forward Jenn Jones were selected to the second team, along with guard Tricia Weatherholtz of Bridgewater, guard Cathie Durham of Emory & Henry and center Lawan Epperson of Lynchburg.

Eastern Mennonite's Becca Nissley was voted rookie of the year, and Tom Palombo of Virginia Wesleyan was selected coach of the year.

Palombo will guide his team against Roanoke today in the ODAC tournament championship. - Staff report
