SOME MOTHERS CAN'T CHOOSE TO STAY HOME

IN A Jan. 30 news story, I was quoted as saying that without the sliding scale of fees at Greenvale Nursery School, I would have to quit my job and stay at home with my children. This is true; however, this statement was not meant to attack mothers who do stay at home with their children, nor was it intended to make women who stay at home feel insignificant in any way.

I am a working mother, working to support a family of five. My husband is mentally ill and unable to work or take care of my three children. Some mothers do not have the option of staying at home - I am one of them.

Greenvale Nursery School has given me piece of mind. I know that my children are happy there and are in good hands. At the same time, they have given me affordable day care.

I am sorry that Nicole Sheppard (letter, Feb. 11) got the wrong impression. She should be thankful that she has the opportunity to care for her children at home. Some of us don't have that option, and we rely on day-care centers. DONNA S. BLANKENSHIP ROANOKE
