HIGHLANDERS SWEEP BUCKNELL IN BASEBALL

A doubleheader sweep of Bucknell on Sunday at Dedmon Center Park has the Radford baseball team off to the best start in its eight-year history.

The Highlanders (3-0) won the first game 5-3 behind the seven-inning pitching performance of freshman Jim Abbott of Springfield. Abbott (1-0) allowed eight hits and one earned run, and he struck out nine, including a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the sixth inning. Brian Pardue hit a two-run home run for Radford.

Larry Benson (1-0) and Matt Wise combined to pitch Radford's 5-1 victory in the second game. Designated hitter Phillip Haney had a two-run single in the third inning and finished with the day 3-for-5 with four RBI.

The Bison are 1-3.

Radford plays at home today at 3 p.m. against Juniata. Staff report
