Wallace J. Luce II of Essex was dead at the scene of the 11:30 p.m. accident, which occurred just south of Virginia 635, police said.
Luce was traveling north on Virginia 697 and had just gone around a right-hand curve when he crossed into the southbound lane and collided with a van driven by Barry Eugene Chocklett, 41, of Route 3, Moneta, according to Trooper Danny Tibbs.
After the collision, the vehicles came to rest in the northbound lane, Tibbs said.
Soon after the accident occurred, a pickup truck being driven north by Ronald Wayne Donahue, 32, of Route 2, Boones Mill, rounded a curve and struck the van, Tibbs said.
Donahue had no warning that the vehicles were in the road because of the curves and because there were no lights on the vehicles, the trooper said.
Chocklett suffered a broken sternum in the accident and Donahue was treated and released. A teen-aged boy riding in Luce's car was not seriously injured, Tibbs said.
Luce was in the area because he was visiting a friend in Rocky Mount, Tibbs said.
