ROANOKE ASSISTING STATE GAMES

Roanoke City Council voted Monday to appropriate $30,000 to help cover the cost for the Commonwealth Games of Virginia this year, the same amount the city donated last year.

City Manager Bob Herbert recommended that council provide the money, saying the games will be an economic benefit for the Roanoke Valley because the participants will spend money for lodging, meals, transportation and other expenses.

Herbert said this year's games are expected to attract more than 6,000 athletes and their families.

Virginia Amateur Sports, the sponsor of the games, will ask the city to waive rental fees for some facilities that will be used for the games, Herbert said.

Roanoke County has agreed to appropriate $25,000 for the games.
