TECH WOMEN'S WEEK ACTIVITIES

Virginia Tech's Women's Week Committee is sponsoring a day of activities related to reproductive issues on Thursday.

A round table on abortion legislation will be held at Cranwell International Center at noon. Janet McDowell, community education coordinator for Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge, will host a lecture and workshop on "Legal, Ethical and Polictical Issues of RU 486" in Donaldson Brown, Room F, beginning at 1:30.

A discussion on "Women and AIDS" begins at 3:30 in Room A of Donaldson Brown Continuing Education Center.

Safe sex will be the focus of the final discussion at 5:30 p.m. in Litton Reaves Hall, room 1810.

All events are free and open to the public.

At 8 p.m. on Thursday, Anndrena Belcher, a storyteller from Scott County, will present "Emma: Wings Again, Wide and Free," celebrating the life of poet and artist Emma Bell Miles. Admission is free.

On Friday, Cranwell International Center will sponsor International Women's Day, spotlighting the diversity and achievements of women around the world.

Events begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Cranwell Center with a celebration that will focus on craft demonstrations, songs, dances, music, stories and personal experiences of women worldwide.

The celebration will feature an address by Caroline Moser, an urban specialist from the World Bank. She will hold a brown-bag discussion at noon in Room 658 of McBryde Hall on "The Effects of Strctural Adjustment on Poor Women." Moser will speak on feminism and development in Room A of Donaldson Brown at 3:30 p.m.

In that room at 1:30 p.m., there will be a discussion on "International Women and Health: An Agenda for the 90's."

International Women's Day will end with Paula Larke, Ann Kilkelly and Elise Witt's performance of "Places/Her Stories" at 5:30 p.m. in the Squires Studio Theater. The three performance artists will present original stories, songs and dances about ancestry, women, voice and rhythm.

The events are open to the public and free of charge.
