SYMPHONY BAND CONCERT THURSDAY

"Music of Love, Life and Death" is the theme for the midwinter concert presented by Virginia Tech's University Symphony Band Thursday at 8 p.m. in Burruss Auditorium. Assistant professor of music David McKee will conduct.

The band will play pieces that have drawn themes or inspiration from tales of tragic love, such as "Siegfried's Funeral Music" by Richard Wagner, "Highlights from West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein and the overture to "The Tsar's Bride" by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

The featured piece is "The Legend of Alcobaca," a five-movement work for the symphonic band by Virginia Tech assistant professor of music James Sochinski. Written in 1989, Sochinski's composition is a musical setting of the tragic 14th century love affair of Dom Pedro, son of Alfonso IV and heir to the Portuguese throne, and Ines de Castro. The work was commissioned by and dedicated to Lawrence Sutherland and the Wind Ensemble of California State University-Fresno.

Thursday's performance of "The Legend of Alcobaca" marks the Virginia Tech premiere.

Tickets will be available at the door before the concert. Admission is $2.
