NORTH ANNA N-PLANT GIVEN OK FOR RESTART

Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials gave Virginia Power permission Monday to restart its nuclear reactor at the North Anna power plant after the utility repaired cracks in tubes carrying super-heated radioactive water in the unit's steam generators.

Unit 1 was shut down Dec. 23. Bill Stewart, Virginia Power's senior vice president for nuclear operations, said he expected the unit to begin operating immediately.

The company plans to run the unit until January, then replace the 13-year-old steam generators at a cost of about $180 million. - Associated Press
