HAMMERSLEY, E. HOWARD, JR. E. Howard Hammersley, Jr., Colonel USAF
Retired, died March 2 at his home. A Roanoke native, he attended Jefferson
High School and graduated from Roanoke College in 1938. For 42 years he was a
photographer with the Roanoke Times & World-News, receiving many honors and
awards for his coverage of events in the history of Virginia and the United
States. His works have been shown in numerous one-man exhibitions throughout
the state. He has given his news photographs to Roanoke College. In 1941 he
enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, served in England and North Africa, and
was Chief Photo Officer for the Allied Forces in the Mediterranean Theater.
His war photographs have been featured in many anthologies and publications,
and his extensive collection has been given to the George C. Marshall Library
at VMI. He was commanding officer of the 8373rd Air Force Reserve Unit when he
retired in 1972. He is survived by his wife, Anne; six children and six
grandchildren, Elizabeth Barber and sons, Bill Burton, Salem, and Robert
Burton, Wrightsville Beach, N.C.; Karen Hammersley, Norfolk; Lisa and Bill
Reynolds, Lindsey and Scott, Richmond; Robert and Gail Hammersley, Jenny and
Chrissy, Wrightsville Beach, N.C.; Charles and Judy Hammersley, Moscow, Idaho;
James and Patricia Hammersley, Deltona, Fla.; his sister, Rachel Cassell,
Pulaski. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke. Friends may call at the home. Col.
Hammersley requested that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Center
in the Square Endowment Fund or the Roanoke College Valley Scholarship Fund.
Memorial services will be conducted at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel 12:00 noon
Wednesday by Dr. Noel C. Taylor and Dr. John Wesley Newman. Burial will be
private.
