First Sergeant Edward L. Henson, Sr., age 91, died in Wise, Virginia on March 3, 1992. He was born in Amherst County on September 17, 1900, the son of Edward J. and Nealie Henson, and spent his early years in Buena Vista, Virginia. He was associated with Virginia Military Institute over a period of fifty years as a non-commissioned officer in the United States Army and as a master machinist in the engineering departments. He was best-known to a generation of cadets as an instructor in horsemanship and cavalry tactics. In the 1930's, he organized and coached the VMI horse show team which met with great success in Virginia and North Carolina. A fine horseman himself, he and his beloved horse "Jack Knife" dominated the jumping classes for many years. He received the Army Commendation Medal upon his retirement in 1947. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Fetters Henson of Wise; a son, Dr. Edward L. Henson, Jr., Wise; and by three grandsons, Ned Henson of Richmond; Christopher Henson of Roanoke; and Will Henson of Wise. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6 at Neriah Baptist Church, Lexington, Virginia. The Rev. Jill Y. Crainshaw will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Neriah Baptist Church, Box 92, Route 5, Lexington, Va. Sturgill Funeral Home in Wise, Va. and Harrison Funeral Home in Lexington, Va. are in charge of arrangements.
