BEES DROP BULLDOGS IN 2 OT

In what has been a season of ups and downs for Martinsville, the Bulldogs took a fast elevator ride down and out of the Region III boys' basketball tournament Tuesday at the Salem Civic Center.

Brookville outlasted the Bulldogs 49-48 in double overtime to advance to tonight's 6:30 semifinal game against Northside for the right to make a trip to the Group AA tournament.

The Bulldogs (20-4) led 40-33 after Lamont Martin scored on a jumper with 6:33 left in the third quarter. Then Martinsville went into a four-corners and its offense went dead.

Martinsville didn't score another field goal until 11 seconds were left in the second overtime, when Lamont Martin hit a follow-up. By that time, Brookville (20-4) had the lead.

The Bulldogs made turnovers and missed free throws against a Bees' defense that wouldn't buckle.

"What we were doing was trying to hold on instead of going to the basket," Martinsville coach Husky Hall said.

"We had to play four-corners because we don't run our offense. We play too much individually. I'll just go get my golf sticks and hit the course."

Brookville coach Mike Dufrene told his team to avoid fouls and be patient. "I was afraid we'd have to start fouling them after awhile. Then we said let's play hard defense and see how patient they are."

The Bulldogs led from the 2:52 mark of the first quarter until Brookville's Jason Gorsline canned a 3-point shot with 37 seconds left in regulation for a 46-46 tie.

"It was a great shot, but it wouldn't have been if four other guys hadn't done their job," Dufrene said. "Two had to set picks, one had to go inside and draw the defense and the other guy had to make the pass."

Neither team scored in the first overtime; Brookville didn't even get a shot and the Bulldogs missed three.

In the second overtime, the Bulldogs turned the ball over after winning the jump ball. The Bees finally took the lead as Greg Coffee scored to make it 48-46.

Another Bulldogs turnover and this time Gorsline made a free throw to give the Bees a three-point lead with 24 seconds left.

Martinsville still wasn't dead. Lamont Martin made the follow-up with 11 seconds left; Coffee was quickly fouled and he missed; and Demetriz Martin then missed a running 15-foot shot for a Martinsville win. Brookville's Greg Canad got the rebound to cap the victory.

"This is the most unbelievable team I've had," said Hall, whose team was 16-of-47 from the field. "I can't predict them. They change from one game to the next."

Martinsville was fresh off an upset of No. 1-ranked Laurel Park in the Piedmont District championship game.

The first half was a defensive struggle, which was what Brookville wanted. The Bulldogs, playing the Bees' game, however, had a 26-21 lead at intermission because of Demetriz Martin's shooting. He was 4-of-5 from the field for eight points.

Brookville's only lead was 6-5, and the Bulldogs went on a 10-3 run the rest of the quarter to lead 15-8.

Martinsville was up to the defensive struggle. The Bulldogs forced 12 turnovers as Michael Frasier and Demetriz Martin combined for five steals. Martinsville also held a 13-11 rebounding edge.

Brookville made three of four shots from the field in the second quarter, but never got closer to the Bulldogs than three points.
