SUMNER LEADS CARROLL

Ben Sumner scored 14 points to spark Carroll County to a big lead, and the Cavaliers went on to a 74-56 Region IV boys' basketball victory over Tazewell on Tuesday night.

The victory advanced the Cavaliers (15-9) to the regional semifinals against Virginia High in Bristol on Thursday at 7 p.m. Tazewell finished 14-9.

Sumner finished with a game-high 24 points, but his output in the first quarter helped Carroll break out to a 25-11 lead. The Cavaliers' lead was down to 35-30 by halftime, but they gradually built it to the final margin in the second half. \

Martinsville 48

Brookville outlasted Martinsville in double overtime to advance to tonight's Region III semifinal game against Northside for the right to make a trip to the Group AA tournament.

The Bulldogs (20-4) led 40-33 after Lamont Martin scored on a jumper with 6:33 left in the third quarter. Then Martinsville went into a four-corners and didn't score another field goal until 11 seconds were left in the second overtime. By that time, Brookville (20-4) led. \
