She is the only challenger.
Roxie R. Novak, 48, who lives in the Belmont Estate area, filed her candidacy around 4 p.m. Tuesday, three hours shy of the deadline. She began collecting her required 125 petition signatures around 6:30 p.m. Monday.
"My neighbors felt that I'd do a good job," said Novak, mother of one son. "And I thought it'd be a good thing, too."
She plans to be a voice for the community and hopes to get things accomplished that the voters want.
Novak, a math professor at Radford University for 25 years, will be up against incumbents Truman K. Daniel Jr., Wayne Booth and W. Scott Weaver.
She is on the board of directors at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Daniel and Weaver.
"They're both nice people and I like them," she said. "It doesn't bother me in the least," to be running against men. "That's what most mathematics departments are made of: men."
Unlike her counterparts, Novak has never served on a community governing body. She did apply for the Montgomery County School Board last year, but was not appointed.
"I'm excited," Novak said Tuesday. "This is all new and exciting and I hope to win."
