FREE THROWS KEY FACTOR FOR KNIGHTS

Cave Spring buried Woodbridge at the free-throw line to win the opening round of the girls' basketball Group AAA Northwestern Region tournament.

The Knights were 26-for-35 at the line, while the Vikings were only 5-for-6.

"That was the difference in the ballgame," Woodbridge coach Ron Davis said Tuesday night after his team lost 64-55.

In the fourth quarter alone, Cave Spring shot 22 free throws and made 15. Woodbridge was 2-for-3 in the period.

The Vikings end their season 19-7.

Cave Spring advances to the second round on Thursday at 7 p.m., against GW-Danville.

Cave Spring's first loss of the season was to G.W. Danville, and the Knights can't wait for the rematch.

"Our kids are looking forward to going down to Danville and avenge our first loss," said Knights coach David Layman. "We've been looking for the opportunity to go back. We knew if we won we could go back."

Woodbridge led 10-4 before Cave Spring got untracked.

The Knights went on an 11-2 run to end the first quarter up 15-12. They extended that lead to 31-26 at halftime.

Woodbridge began the second half with more scrap and hustle. The Vikings scored two layups and pulled to 31-30 with 5:11 left in the third quarter.

But that was the closest the Vikings would get for the rest of the game.

"We tried to press baseline-to-baseline and sideline-to-sideline," Davis said. "I thought our press rattled them. It seem to get them out of sync a little bit.

"They had a lot of depth. We did everything we had to do to win the ballgame and didn't."

Layman said Cave Spring's game plan was to draw some fouls inside, which they accomplished.

"Even though we drew the fouls, we were not scoring the goals," Layman said.

The Knights shot 38.2 percent (18-for-47) from the field.

Woodbridge had a poor shooting night also. The Vikings shot 38. 5 percent (25-for-65) from the field.

In Dublin, Pulaski County got 24 points, seven assists and six steals from Terri Garland and routed Albemarle 66-34 in another Northwestern Region girls' game.
