"I feel it certainly should give us some stature with the federal agencies that are going to be considering this," said Sen. Clarence Holland, D-Virginia Beach.
Wilder has urged the U.S. Department of Commerce to give swift approval to the 85-mile pipeline.
The project got another boost when the Virginia Senate amended a ground-water bill Tuesday to include a provision endorsing the pipeline. The amended bill passed 24-15 despite protests from rural senators that it would encourage urban areas to take water from rural regions.
The pipeline would transport 60 million gallons of water each day to satisfy water demand in Virginia Beach, the state's largest city.
The city has been fighting in court for the pipeline for a decade. - Associated Press
