MUNICIPAL DEADLINE FOR HOPEFULS PASSES

There were no surprise candidates Tuesday as the deadline passed for May 5 municipal elections in Rocky Mount and Boones Mill.

The only contested race will be for the Boones Mill Town Council, with seven candidates vying for six seats.

The ballot will include two political newcomers, Virginia M. Carroll and B. Kevin Goode, and five incumbents - Martha Boyer, W. Dale Fisher, Donna Guthrie, Maurice C. Turner and Charles D. Wright.

Incumbent John Cooper is retiring.

Mayor Juanita Murray is unopposed for re-election.

In Rocky Mount, three candidates are running for three City Council seats.

James Laury, retired manager of Leggett, is running for a four-year term along with incumbents Arnold Dillon and Posey Dillon.

Incumbent Hunt Cooper is stepping down.
