WASTE-BURNING: CONSIDER WORKERS

I'VE BEEN on the outside and inside of the cement plant in Botetourt more years than I care to remember. I've seen the kilns go down and those workers put many hours, night and day, into replacing the brick in them so they can begin another day's work.

Has anybody looked at this hazardous-waste issue from the workmen's viewpoint? One of Lone Star's retired managers stated to me, "I'd hate to think I had to send workers into those kilns to repair them when they broke down." Is there enough money to send our fathers, sons and husbands into those kilns to repair them and replace those porous brick after the plant has constantly burned this waste?

Yes, the air and water are very important to us, as neighbors of the plant, but our families cannot be replaced. Thank God, my husband has retired. JEAN GRUBBS TROUTVILLE
