NESTOR ALMENDROS, OSCAR WINNER, DIES

Cinematographer Nestor Almendros, who helped change the look of Hollywood films with his concept of natural light and filmed such movies as "Sophie's Choice" and "Kramer vs. Kramer," died Wednesday. He was 61.

The Spanish-born filmmaker died at his Manhattan residence, said director-producer Jorge Ulla, co-director with him on the documentary "Nobody Listened." Almendros had been suffering from lymphoma, Ulla said.

Almendros won an Academy Award for cinematography in 1979 for "Days of Heaven," directed by Terrence Malick and starring Richard Gere and Brook Adams.

His other movies include "Places in the Heart" with Sally Field, directed by Robert Benton; "Sophie's Choice" with Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline, Almendros' favorite; "Still of the Night," also with Streep; and his last movie, "Billy Bathgate," which opened late last year.
