Kmart Corp., the Troy, Mich., retailer with outlets in Roanoke, reported net income for its fiscal year ended Jan. 29 up 13.6 percent to $859 million from $756 million from the previous year. Earnings per share rose to $4.03 from $3.78. Sales in 1991 reached a record $34.58 billion, an increase of 7.8 percent from $32.07 billion for the 1990 fiscal year.
Net income for the fourth quarter increased 19.2 percent to $479 million from 1990's $402 million. Earnings per share were $2.11, compared with $2.01 in the year-ago period. Sales rose 8.3 percent to $10.56 billion from $9.75 billion for the same period of 1990.
For its Waldenbooks subsidiary, Kmart said operating income increased 28.5 percent to $38 million from $29 million in 1990 and sales reached $1.14 billion, up 7.1 percent from the $1.06 billion a year earlier.
