PLANNERS BACK AWAY FROM ELLETT VALLEY ROAD

The town's Planning Commission has backed away from recommending another road between the town and Ellett Valley - at least for now.

Commissioners decided Tuesday they wanted more information first, such as traffic counts and accident rates in the Nellies Cave area.

They want to keep traffic flow the way it is and not make changes such as turning Grissom Lane into a one-way street.

"I agree with collecting the data," said John Novak, who was not at the commission's work session last week. But he didn't like a staff proposal for another road. "I'm opposed to that."

Novak was not alone.

Several other commission members who were at the work session backed away from the consensus they apparently had reached.

"We don't have everything, the additional information," said Frances Parsons, "and we might want to run it by the [Nellies Cave] task force when we get the information."

The commission also heard the first negative outcry on Montgomery County's proposition for a new road through existing subdivisions and new developments to Blacksburg.

"I don't intend to state I represent all my neighbors, but the ones I've talked with are strongly opposed to this," said Randy Leslie, who lives in the county's Deercroft subdivision.

"We decided to live in a rural subdivision," he said. "We're not concerned with how long it takes to get from the valley to town or from town to work."

Planning Commissioner Joe Jones, who predicted such protests at last week's work session, then said he had received two phone calls against linking any new road through subdivisions.

In other action Tuesday, the Blacksburg Planning Commission:

Postponed rezoning nearly 389 acres for the proposed Hethwood II residential development back to agricultural.

The rezoning request was automatic because no final site plan was received within a year of the property being designated to become a residential planned development.

Approved a permit for the Reynolds Aluminum Recycling Trailer at the Capri Twin Theatre on University City Boulevard. Managers from Blockbuster Video had complained that the site blocked the view of their store, but they did not attend meetings to discuss the complaint.
