\ Roanoke job outlook may lift in 3rd quarter
Hiring prospects in the Roanoke area are much brighter for the third quarter than for the second quarter of this year, according to Manpower Inc., a temporary-help firm.
The firm's quarterly forecast from employers showed 20 percent said they will add personnel by summer, while none plan layoffs and 80 percent expect no changes.
For the second quarter, 17 percent of the Roanoke-area employers surveyed said they intended to hire new workers and the same number planned to reduce their work forces, according to Ann Ward, spokeswoman for the company. In the past, she said, hiring increased in the second quarter.
Ward said the most promising outlook for jobs this spring is in construction, manufacturing of non-durable goods, trade, services and finance/insurance/real estate.
Nationally, the company said, 21 percent of employers surveyed expect to increase their staffs, while 10 percent plan to reduce their work force and 67 percent see no change. - Staff report
\ Peninsula airport seeks user-tax levy
NEWPORT NEWS - Passengers may end up paying a $1 to $3 user tax to help pay for improvements at the Newport News/Williamsburg International airport.
The Peninsula Airport Commission has told Airport Manager John Mahaffey to petition the Federal Aviation Administration for approval to levy the tax. Mahaffey said he does not know how much of a tax, called a passenger facility charge, would be requested.
Mahaffey said the money would help pay for $6 million to $10 million in improvements planned over the next five to eight years, including a runway overrun area and runway approach lights. - Associated Press
\ Judge: News service about ready to fold
NEW YORK - United Press International is losing $100,000 a month and may be close to going out of business, the judge overseeing its bankruptcy reorganization said Wednesday as he gave its creditors new responsibilities.
Wednesday was the deadline for the news wire service to file a plan for bringing UPI out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Francis Conrad refused UPI's request for a delay until June 4 and allowed the creditors to devise their own plan.
The decision was praised by attorneys for the 18-member creditors committee, which includes AT&T, GTE and General Electric. The creditors are owed $60 million. - Associated Press
