RELIGION BRIEFS

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER, an annual observance of Church Women United, is scheduled Friday. The Roanoke Valley unit of the ecumenical women's group will have its celebration at St. John's Episcopal Church, Elm Avenue at South Jefferson Street in downtown Roanoke. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Stewardship of the Earth will be the theme with Ellen Aiken of the Clean Valley Council speaking on "Recycling."

\ EDGEWOOD CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 1006 Peck St. N.W., will sponsor a marriage enrichment seminar March 14. A series of video presentations will make up the "Maximum Marriage" event. Evangelical Christian counselor Tim Timmons will discuss "Why Marriage When You Can Live Together?" "Eleven Battlegrounds of Marriage," "Why are Women So Weird and Men So Strange?" and "How Do You Spell Relief?"

\ THE REV. QUEEN ESTHER SNELL, former pastor of St.John African Methodist Episcopal Church of Roanoke, will speak at the annual Woman's Day services Sunday at High Street Baptist Church, 2302 Florida Ave. N.W. Snell now serves Brown A.M.E. Church in Smithfield. Morning worship begins at 10:30 a.m. and a special program starts at 3. The High Street Woman's Day Choir will sing for the service, and the theme is "Women Celebrating Godly Attributes."

\ FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, 310 N. Jefferson St., has scheduled a choral program Sunday at 4 p.m. under sponsorship of the Senior Usher Board. Participants will include the Stewart Jones Ensemble and singing groups from Macedonia Baptist, Price Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Pilgrim Baptist and Mount Zion A.M.E. as well as the host church.

\ WOODLAND CHURCH, Blacksburg Road, will sponsor special services Saturday through March 11. Jack McGuckin, a retired World War II colonel who fought with the Black Sheep Squadron flying unit, will lead the services. The Saturday night service begins at 6:30 with those on Sunday at 11 and 7. Weeknight meetings will begin at 7:30.

\ THE ANDERSON UNIVERSITY DRAMA TROUPE of Anderson, Ind. will perform "The Long Road Home," a play about the prodigal son, Tuesday at 7 p.m. The nine-member group, directed by Steve DeLisle, will be at First Church of God, 5008 Hildebrand Road N.W. Virginia is one of several states where the players are stopping on their spring tour.
