Vinton, WRRC teams win basketball tourney

The Vinton Cavaliers defeated the Williamson Road Recreation Club Sixers 63-42 to clinch the boys' midget championship in the 20th annual WRRC Biddy/Midget League Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Matt McGuire was the leading scorer for the Cavaliers, with 39 points; Josh Wheeler was the leader for the Sixers, with 34.

Vinton reached the finals by defeating the WRRC Celtics, the North Roanoke Tarheels and the Cave Spring Lakers. The Sixers defeated the Cave Spring Chiefs, the Vinton Hokies and the Cave Spring Celtics to reach the final round.

In addition to McGuire and Wheeler, the midget-league boys' all-tournament team included Aaron Murray of the Vinton Cavaliers, Derek Rivers of the Vinton Hokies, Kevin Connelly and Brandon Funk of the Cave Spring Lakers, Shea Francisco of the North Roanoke Lakers, Brad McFarland and Stuart Tims of the Cave Spring Celtics and Brandon Welch of the WRRC Hornets.

The WRRC Hawks were the winners in the midget-league girls' division, defeating the Roanoke Catholic Celtics 16-6.

Marlins place fourth in West Virginia meet

The Carter Center Aquatics Marlins placed fourth overall in the fourth annual Taco Bell Beckley-Raleigh County YMCA Invitational A/B Swim Meet, held recently in Beckley, W.Va. The team is coached by Pat Bateman.

Virginia Johnson and Laura Dichtel led the 9-10 girls in high individual points with Johnson placing first with 66 points and Dichtel placing second with 50 points. Both girls received trophy awards.
